2 Days in Shanghai: A First-Time Visitor Itinerary

A flexible first-visit plan for Yu Garden, Nanjing Road, the Bund and Pudong, with choices for a late start, rain or a lighter walking day.

Your two-day Shanghai itinerary at a glance

For a first Shanghai visit, spend Day 1 around Yu Garden, Nanjing Road and the Bund, then Day 2 in Lujiazui, Pudong. This suggested itinerary uses two full sightseeing days, with arrival and departure travel given their own time.

You can shorten either day. Treat the sightseeing bus as an alternative way to organise the route, rather than adding a full circuit to an already busy afternoon. For a quick visual introduction, watch our two-day Shanghai video.

Before you leave the hotel

  • Save the hotel's Chinese name and address with the address-card tutorial.
  • Confirm which attraction you intend to enter. A neighbourhood visit and an admission ticket are different decisions.
  • Check the current entry arrangements, opening days, weather and last return option for any place you choose.
  • Put the exact destination in your map and check the route from your own hotel. This guide does not give a fixed transfer time.
  • Keep one optional stop that you can drop if you start late or need a rest.

If your first “day” begins after a flight or long train journey, treat it as a shorter orientation session. Keep the longer part of the route for a day when you have settled in. Use the arrival checklist before starting sightseeing.

Day 1: the old-city area, Nanjing Road and the Bund

Morning — choose Yu Garden or a lighter bazaar visit

Start by deciding what you want from the Yu Garden (豫园) area. Yu Garden is the historic garden; Yuyuan Bazaar is the surrounding shopping area. The official Shanghai garden page places the garden beside the City God Temple and describes the connected garden and shopping area. Our short explainer introduces the distinction.

If the garden itself is a priority, check its current visitor arrangements before planning the rest of the morning. If you prefer a looser start, make the surrounding streets and shops the focus instead. Visiting the bazaar does not mean you have visited the garden.

Leave room for lunch and a rest before moving on. If you have booked garden admission, build the morning around that slot and shorten the shopping stop if needed.

Afternoon — give Nanjing Road one clear role

Use Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street (南京路步行街) as a shopping or city-street stop if that interests you. The official Shanghai introduction describes its department stores, shops and food options. If you would rather spend more time by the river, shorten or skip this part. Check the exact next destination in your map before moving on.

Late afternoon or evening — see the skyline from the Bund

Use the Bund (外滩) for a riverside stop and a broad skyline view. The official Bund page describes the waterfront and its historic buildings; our Bund or Pudong video compares the views from the two areas. An evening revisit is optional.

Leave this part flexible for weather, crowd levels and energy. Check any temporary access notices on the day, and move the river visit to Day 2 if conditions are uncomfortable. This plan does not depend on a scheduled light display.

Day 2: a Pudong visit and a flexible afternoon

Morning — see the towers from the Pudong side

Use Lujiazui (陆家嘴) as a starting area for a closer view of the Pudong towers. The official Shanghai listing places the Oriental Pearl Tower (东方明珠) in this riverside area. Choose your exact destination there before checking the route from your hotel.

Decide whether looking from outside is enough or whether one indoor attraction is important to you. You can have a complete day without buying several observation-deck tickets.

If you choose to enter an attraction, check its current ticket, entry and weather-related arrangements with the operator. This guide does not quote a price or guarantee visibility. Save the exact entrance or meeting point, rather than only the name of a large building.

Afternoon — choose one of three endings

Stay near your Pudong stop: take a slower lunch and keep the rest of the visit nearby. This suits travellers who want fewer transfers or a lighter walking day.

Return to a favourite area: revisit the Bund or a place you shortened on Day 1, after checking the route and return journey. Avoid adding an extra cross-city stop only to fill the afternoon.

Use a sightseeing bus as an alternative: compare the Shanghai sightseeing-bus guide. It contains route and ticket information to check with the operator. A bus route is an alternative way to organise a day; it does not guarantee that you can get off and visit every landmark on the map.

If a train or flight leaves that day, plan backwards from the journey to the correct station or terminal. Keep your final stop easy to leave. The railway guide explains what to save for a train journey; it does not calculate your transfer buffer.

Change the plan for rain, a late start or less walking

Rain or poor visibility: reduce the open-air part and choose one indoor visit only after checking current admission information. Keep a later river slot optional. An observation deck is not automatically a good bad-weather substitute.

A late start: keep one main area and one optional stop. You can move the rest to Day 2 without calling the first day a failure.

Less walking: shorten each area, add seated breaks and check the route's lifts, entrances and surfaces with the relevant operator. This guide has not audited step-free access and does not label the route accessible.

Only one full day: choose between the garden/bazaar plus Bund day and a Pudong-focused day. Use the first-trip Shanghai video to decide how much Shanghai fits your wider China itinerary.

What this itinerary can and cannot settle

The order, pacing and alternatives are editorial suggestions. The Shanghai Government's garden, Bund, Nanjing Road and Oriental Pearl Tower pages were read on 29 October 2026 for the basic landmark identities and locations. Existing Shanghai videos add context. No route timing, complete walk, restaurant, attraction booking or accessibility check was performed for this guide.

Check current opening arrangements, reservations, fares, transfers and temporary controls for your travel date. Start with the official Shanghai visitor website and the attraction or transport operator. Exact prices and hours are outside this itinerary's checked scope.
