China high-speed rail: plan the checkpoints before the platform

Use this sequence for a first intercity train journey in China. It is deliberately operator-aware: station access, ticket rules and service options can change, so 12306 remains the final operational check.

Treat the trip as five checkpoints

1. Book through an official or clearly accountable channel. Save the train number, date, departure station, arrival station and passenger details.
2. Match the passenger record. Recheck the name and travel-document details before payment and again before departure.
3. Match the exact station. Large cities can have several stations with similar names. Save the full Chinese station name and route to the correct entrance.
4. Protect enough station time. Allow for transport delays, security and document checks, orientation and the walk to the gate.
5. Match train, gate, platform and carriage. Follow the live station display and staff instructions rather than an old screenshot.

The official English-language 12306 site is the primary online passenger-service entry point used by this guide. The existence of an English site does not guarantee that every service or operator instruction is available in English.

Keep a recovery path

• Save the booking and station name offline.
• Keep the payment method used for the booking available for changes or refunds.
• Know where to ask staff for help before the gate closes.
• If a connection matters, leave enough margin to recover from a delay.

Common failure points

• Going to the wrong station in the right city.
• Entering passenger details that do not match the travel document.
• Confusing the train number with a platform or carriage number.
• Arriving with no time for entry and security checks.
• Assuming a change or refund can be handled the same way through every seller.
